Ever since we've gotten Smartphones and used them in the car, Patti & I have had a conversation about how "distracting" a Smartphone is.
In Maine, the law distinctly prohibits "texting". However, in my techno-mind a Smartphone was a phone and not that distracting...so we decided to bring in an objective opinion.
We met with Chief McFadden and Officer Ward of the City of Belfast Police Department, who clarifed the whole "distracted driving" premise. It's really got nothing to do with a SmartPhone....could be a dumb phone, a radio, combing your hair while looking in the mirror... ANY distraction "that actually impairs the ability of the person to safely operate the vehicle" is illegal.
More than that, the consequence of driving distracted and having an accident just isn't Smart. And I must admit, looking at SmartPhone, with it's Visual Screen is LOTS more distracting than talking on a dumb phone.
So we're choosing to drive Smarter and keeping our interaction on our SmartPhones to when we're parked in the Lot.
Thanks to the Belfast Police Department for taking the time to educate us.
Drive SMART, Drive SAFE.
