WMTW May 9, 2009 Painting Will Cover More Than 5 Football FieldsPORTLAND, Maine -- It's being billed as the largest public art painting in the world.London-based artist Jaime Gili has been commissioned to paint the Sprague Energy oil tank farm along South Portland waterfront.He beat out more than 500 other artists for the job.The nonprofit group Maine Center for Creativity is footing the $1 million bill for the project.A model of Gili's vision for the tanks was unveiled Saturday at a Portland art gallery.The artwork will stretch for 261,000 square feet across the surface of 16 oil tanks. The coverage area is comparable in size to five-and-a-half football fields.Gili said it will take three years to complete the project. FMI Jim's comment: No Photo with the story!
