...Belfast's distinction as the chicken capital of Maine started to diminish more than 30 years ago and now Grass, who has been a chicken farmer for most of his life, is ready to get out of chicken farming for good....
...“This is the last flock,” Grass said earlier this month. “When they go out, there will be no more chickens raised in Maine.”...
Jim's comment: Some big changes recenntly with sad effect for Mainers. No more sardines, no more chickens, no more jobs related to these industries. How would Patti & I feel if no more tourists came to Maine? Sad day for Mr. Grass.
While many blame big business for these closings, we feel the individual has a choice. We had an open house yesterday and chose the Belfast COOP to do our catering. The COOP used local Maine eggs and products from places we recognize. The presentation was superb, the taste exquisite. Many of our guests learned how great local products are. Thanks COOP!
History is a great teacher. FMI about Belfast's past read the full article HERE.
In our never ending mission to serve the tourist's visiting Maine, the Maine Coast Welcome Center will be serving Ice Cream !
Belfast favorite, Scoops has joined the Maine Coast Welcome Center family of tourist services. Karen Rak has set up shop within the Maine Coast Welcome Center with Scoops East, a satellite operation in addition to her Main St. Belfast location. While our guests are being educated on the places to stay, places to eat, and things to do in our great state of Maine, they'll be enjoying some Maine made ice cream & gelato to kick off their experience.
Scoops grand opening is Thursday, May 20th from 11am-7pm to lead in to our Belfast Chamber After Hours. Come on over for an Ice Cream and tour of the Maine Coast Welcome Center!
The Indian Camp Basket shop used to be in a tent on Lincolnville Beach. Bob & Jackie Anderson are still at it, running the Ducktrap Basket Shop and Museum in a great old barn just north of Lincolnville Beach. Don't miss visiting them and the Museum upstairs! FMI call 789-5272
