The last of the chicken farmers End of an era for Belfast poultry industry Print E-mail

BDN 5/21/10

...Belfast's distinction as the chicken capital of Maine started to diminish more than 30 years ago and now Grass, who has been a chicken farmer for most of his life, is ready to get out of chicken farming for good....

...“This is the last flock,” Grass said earlier this month. “When they go out, there will be no more chickens raised in Maine.”...

Jim's comment: Some big changes recenntly with sad effect for Mainers. No more sardines, no more chickens, no more jobs related to these industries. How would Patti & I feel if no more tourists came to Maine? Sad day for Mr. Grass.

While many blame big business for these closings, we feel the individual has a choice. We had an open house yesterday and chose the Belfast COOP to do our catering. The COOP used local Maine eggs and products from places we recognize. The presentation was superb, the taste exquisite. Many of our guests learned how great local products are. Thanks COOP!

History is a great teacher. FMI about Belfast's past read the full article HERE.
