(November 13, 2009) Maine Department of Conservation
AUGUSTA, Maine – Maine residents and visitors took to Maine’s state parks and historic sites with a passion this past season, according to year-to-date figures released by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL).
Sixty days of rain this summer failed to dampen enthusiasm for day use and overnight camping at the state’s 47 parks and historic sites. Attendance to date has increased by an unexpected 6.7 percent over last year’s attendance figures.
Day-use at the state parks and historic sites has increased by a significant 7.4 percent, or 138,745 more visitors, through October over last year. Despite the bad weather, overnight camping stays at the 12 state parks that have campgrounds to date have increased by 1 percent, or about 2,000 more visits, over last year’s figures.
“This is excellent news; it confirms our belief that people love our state parks and historic sites and are returning again and again to their own special places,” said Commissioner Patrick K. McGowan of the Maine Department of Conservation, which oversees the BPL. “Such visits enhance personal enjoyment and well-being, create wonderful family memories and support our tourist and retail economy.”
“We are really happy with the way Mainers and our visitors continue to use our state parks and historic sites, especially when the weather is good!” Will Harris, Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands director, said. “We hope that they continue to make this a life-long habit of coming to our parks and enjoying them."

Jim's comment: "Next season will be the Maine Parks 75th Anniversary. We're looking for even more happy campers next year."

Show becomes best-selling, highest-grossing production in company's 36-year history
Bangor Daily News 11/7/09
...The show, Penobscot Theatre Company’s “Forever Plaid,” is the best-selling and highest-grossing production the nonprofit has put on in its 36-year history, the theater said this week.
“As of right now I’d say it is at least 20 percent more than the last previous held record,...” producing artistic director Scott Levy said Wednesday, days before the final weekend of the show.
...Donna McNeil, a director of the Maine Arts Commission, said several theaters in Maine are thriving in the recession.
“It sounds Darwinian, but it is a time of separating out who will make it,” McNeil said.
She attributed smart programming, good grant writing and sensible pricing to the success of some live art venues in the state...

OLD TOWN, Maine — With its watercraft division now fully consolidated in Old Town, Wisconsin-based Johnson Outdoors on Tuesday held a celebration that drew state and city officials, corporate executives and invited rank-and-file employees of the Old Town Canoe manufacturing plant.
...Earlier this year, Johnson Outdoors announced it would close its manufacturing facility in Ferndale, Wash., and consolidate its plastic boat manufacturing in Old Town. In addition to Old Town Canoe brand canoes and kayaks, Johnson Outdoors manufactures the Necky and Ocean Kayak brands...

Jim's comment: "A fine Maine brand. Just after college, 3 friends and I took 2 Old Town "Trippers" down the Thoreau canoe trail from Big Bog to Bangor, following the Penobscot River watershed. Old Town sponsored the trip! Glad to see a venerable brand expanding here in Maine."

BAR HARBOR, Maine — The 2009 cruise ship season came to a close on Sunday as Cunard’s flagship vessel, the Queen Mary 2, weighed anchor and glided out of Frenchman Bay under starry skies.
Charlie Phippen, Bar Harbor’s harbor master, said the QM2’s visit was the 92nd and final cruise ship visit for 2009....
...If the weather is generally good next year and other possible complications are kept to a minimum, 2010 could be a record year for the local cruise ship season. According to Phippen, he has 115 cruise ship visits penciled in for 2010. Some ships have booked anchorage areas in the bay for the next two years, he said...
...Bar Harbor has been estimated to get approximately 130,000 cruise ship passengers each year...

Jim's comment: "I love cruise ships. We keep a list of landings posted at the Welcome Center. It's part of the information we provide. We tell the tourists the days Acadia will be CROWDED and offer them alternatives, like staying in Belfast! So the more ships in Bar Harbor means more visitors trying less busy locations along the Maine Coast."

Maine; Get Back in the Saddle
In the ’60s and ’70s, Saddleback Maine charged as much as neighboring Sugarloaf for lift tickets. But years of neglect left the resort a tangled mess of poorly cut trails and aging lifts. Enter the Berrys. Since buying Saddleback six years ago, the family has been quietly restoring this 4,120-foot peak to its prime....
